A few weeks back I saw a Banksy rat on an electric box in South Boston. A friend contemplated nabbing that up and selling it on ebay for $$$, but questioned it’s validity. Maybe he had nothing to worry about!
With Banksy’s film currently out in theaters, he’s doing much of what Obey’s Shepard Fairey did when his solo show came to the ICA: PROMOTE! Shepard did his fair share of bringing his well-known aesthetic to the Greater Boston area, and now Banksy seems to have shown up in Cambridge and Chinatown. Jump on finding them before they’re painted over…
It’s a funny thing to think about. Is being an “underground” artist promoting yourself to the public contradictory? Are you a sell out? If you’ve seen Banksy’s film “Exit Through The Gift Shop” it’s much much less about Banksy’s work, and much more a commentary on street art and the perception of what makes it (and art in general) important. You can see the film in Boston at Landmark Cinema in Kendall Square.
