“Inky Monster Series I” by Jessica Hess
gouache, watercolor, and ink on paper
11″ x 14″, 2009
I first heard about Jessica Hess back in the Spring when DPM co-sponsored a show she was in with my friend Katie Hovland. I was immediately drawn to her detailed paintings of desolate city walls and urban scenes. They looked like photographs, but were actually meticulously detailed paintings that tricked the eye.
Jess has recently put out some new paintings titled “Inky Monster Series”. The playful juxtaposition of the fully realized female forms with the one-color graphic monsters makes for a wonderful contrast. She bumps it up a notch more with the horrified expressions, dramatic forms, and naked bodies of the women. The pieces seem to reference pin-up gals, creature features, and current street art creating something new while still adding in her own touch.
If only we had a flagship store I’d display these proudly!
Feel free to contact Ms. Hess if interested in buying.
(And then donate them to me preeasse!)
