Bread & Butter: Winter 2010

I was fortunate enough to be able to attend this Winter’s Bread & Butter tradeshow in Berlin, Germany. The event took place January 20—22, and brought together hundreds of the industries best brands in fashion, footwear, streetwear, denim, and everything related.

Some companies definitely brought their A game, and in a follow-up post I will be focusing on my top favorite brands I saw at the show. For now, check out a brief video montage of the show and some photos under the cut.

PS-No, Dance Party Massacre did not show at this event—Definitely not raking in enough money for that! (Yet?)

My New Fav Band: Miike Snow

After checking out Black and Blue a few weeks back, I got the whole self-titled album from Miike Snow (a band, not one guy) and it’s been my new favorite album of now.

The latest single “Sylvia” is above—The song better than the video though. My personal favorite off the album is “In Search Of“, a hypnotic electro-synth battle cry.

Vice Magazine T-Shirt Competition

A few weeks ago I was sent a link by a friend, about a “t-shirt competition” Vice Magazine was having… You know, just incase I wanted to send my stuff in. But when the guys behind “Dos and Don’ts” have an open call for something as generic as tee entries, I was more than hesitant.

Enjoying their columns from time to time, and realizing the advantage of free publicity, I sent over an e-mail with this context:

Dear Vice,

I feel like this is some sort of con… like you are really trying to gather all the pathetic t-shirt designs sent your way instead of the good ones. Then you are going to make a big spread of all the unfortunate designers out there. (You know you could.)

In optimistic hopes, I send you over some of my favorite designs from my apparel line.

Yours truly,
Alex

Surprisingly, they decided to showcase one of our shirts (and the Monster Mask), but not surprisingly it was with a few backhanded compliments. Either way, I think it’s kind of funny and ironic. I got exactly what I thought sending something their way.

Thank You!

I wanted to extend a big heartfelt “Thank You” from the bottom of my bloody heart. While the sale that just ended was a the largest discount I’ve ever given, the resulting sales and feedback were fantastic.

The point in the sale was to help purge older product, and convince new customers to see what DPM is about in person. I think it succeeded and I’m excited to move forward.

Thanks again,
Alex

PS-FABNOB just posted a new interview with myself about Dance Party Massacre, the inspiration, how it is running your own line, and plans for the future. Check it out!

Hardcore Alcohol Bottles

AK 47 Kalashnikov Vodka £250
Crystal Head Vodka $44.95
Hijos De Villa Pistol Tequila $24.95

See also Tommy Guns Vodka—But you might not want to bring the guns out in public. And definitely don’t point them at a police officer. (Link)

EDMONTON — Edmonton police say they’ve arrested a 24-year-old suspect after a man pointed what turned out to be a machine gun-shaped liquor bottle at an officer conducting a traffic stop Friday night.

Around 11 p.m., police say a second officer noticed a man in a nearby house pointing what looked like a long barreled gun at the officer doing the traffic stop.

More officers were called in and the home was surrounded.

Several people inside the house eventually surrendered peacefully.

Police then discovered that it wasn’t a real weapon that had been pointed at the officer – it was a liquor bottle made in the shape of a gun.

Jessie Shamarchi Petrin, 24, was charged with possession of an imitation weapon dangerous to the public peace.

Ball and Chain Bag by Maya Luz

Maya Luz will be competing in the latest season of Project Runway that starts this Thursday. Graduating last May, she joins fellow designer Alison Kelly in MassArt alumni that have appeared on the show.

Definitely digging her “Ball and Chain” bags as the ultimate accessory for those true slaves to fashion. How long until Lady Gaga is seen dragging one behind her?

Passion Pit Live Footage from House of Blues Boston (01/06/10)

Passion Pit has been blowing up since the release of their first full-length album Manners last May, which combines influences from electronica, indie rock, and alternative dance. They’ve opened for live acts like Death Cab for Cutie and Girl Talk, were nominated for a 2009 Mtv VMA Award, and their music has been used in the mainstream from ads for the Palm Pixi to an episode of Gossip Girl.

The group comes from the Boston/Cambridge area after lead singer Michael Angelakos from Emerson College joined forces with fellow bandmates who attended Berklee College of Music. This past Wednesday saw Passion Pit return to their hometown and perform at House of Blues Boston, probably their biggest venue to date in the city. It was the kick-off to a new tour which will see them head all the way to Australia and Japan.

I grabbed tickets soon after they went on sale, and was lucky enough to get a little restricted access with (many) thanks to my friend Suzie and Ian from the band. It was a real sight to see getting a good a view of the band and also the growing group of fans who came out. Utilizing a new light show, and better sound system the band looked and sounded great—Their unique sound and vocals came across fully-realized in person.

See for yourself—More videos and photos after the cut!
