C.R.E.E.P. Out Tonight

creep

I don’t know what the C. or the R. or the double E. P. stands for, but tonight is the night the creeps and freaks come out and play. The guys from Hearthrob and Thunderdome are joining together to create this night of mayhem.

Turn it up a notch and show people Boston can get creative too. $3 if you’re dressed to kill—$5 for everyone else. There will be a doorman JUDGING YOU!

This is a sick video flyer for the <3THROB 3 year.

Speaking of Hearthrob and Thunderdome. Three years of fun at Middlesex Lounge will be celebrated this Tuesday, Sept 1 at the <3THROB 3RD ANNIVERSARY. And the Dome returns Friday, Sept 18 with THUNDERDOME XIV after 10 months away. It’s a new location and they promise 3D wall-to-wall video entertainment which I plan to spaz out about!

Japanese film “Grotesque” banned in the UK

faces_of_death_vhs

When I was in my tween years I heard whisperings of a movie with actual murders and deaths caught on film. The Faces of Death series was like an urban legend to me at time when the internet had not yet ruined all mystique of things unknown.

A while back a small video store I came across was going out of business, and selling off all their old VHS. In that collection I found the elusive gems of FOD! For days I was tempted to walk in there and nab them up, but even after all those years (and horror movies) the idea of watching a real life killing made me think part of my soul would die.

It’s kind of like that time I decided to Google “goatse”… (MY EYES!)

Extreme horror has been around, although you often don’t hear of movies being outlawed anymore. Harking back to the era of video nasties the UK is putting a ban on a new Japanese horror film titled “Grotesque”. Usually the UK film board won’t outright restrict a movie, but instead suggest changes that can be made to make it suitable for audiences.

Apparently the film is so disturbing (focusing on the main character taking two victims whom are restrained, humiliated, sexual assaulted, and tortured) that adding cuts still won’t lessen the extremities of the movie.

BMX Starts Parties (FREE Music Download!)

bmx_music

Last summer, about every mix CD I made for people’s parties started off with BMX’s “Theme to BMX”. It’s a no-frills, lo-fi friendly jaunt about getting the party started.

Their song “WAR” might as well be the follow-up as it brings in the same care-free, fun sound and chit-chat vocals. Doing a little Google-searching, apparently this song came out last year, but oh well! BMX just posted a myspace bulletin to Triple J Unearthed where it was featured with a few other songs.

So before the summer comes to a close, jump on this track, and throw it on the soundsystem while warming up the party!

Download a HQ version here.

Back with Crack

*Aug 12 - 00:05*

I’ve been away on travel and my first post back I’d like to talk about crack.

Turns out there’s a Brooklyn man who will deliver you some $1 “crack” bags (candy crack) between 10PM and 2AM as part of his performance art. He also comes dressed up in the crazy costume pictures above. For the record, if he was doing this in Boston I would be calling him at midnight this Saturday.

Read all about it here including how it makes some people angry.

Jessica Hess Monster Series

“Inky Monster Series I” by Jessica Hess
gouache, watercolor, and ink on paper
11″ x 14″, 2009

I first heard about Jessica Hess back in the Spring when DPM co-sponsored a show she was in with my friend Katie Hovland. I was immediately drawn to her detailed paintings of desolate city walls and urban scenes. They looked like photographs, but were actually meticulously detailed paintings that tricked the eye.

Jess has recently put out some new paintings titled “Inky Monster Series”. The playful juxtaposition of the fully realized female forms with the one-color graphic monsters makes for a wonderful contrast. She bumps it up a notch more with the horrified expressions, dramatic forms, and naked bodies of the women. The pieces seem to reference pin-up gals, creature features, and current street art creating something new while still adding in her own touch.

If only we had a flagship store I’d display these proudly!
Feel free to contact Ms. Hess if interested in buying.
(And then donate them to me preeasse!)
